Olympic Fencing

Yesterday I directed a piece in which the cast and team included 2 performers with dyslexia, 3 actresses who have Downs Syndrome, an actor with Aspergers as well as my own special brand of neurodiversity and another actor with none of these issues. I've been thinking about it ever since.

It was really challenging trying to make the rehearsal and performance process work for everyone but challenging in the best of ways. A huge learning experience for me, for which I am immensely grateful. Most of all, I think Samson Harry Hawkins has written a script without tokenism where the characters are each essential for their relationships and personalities not "because of..." or "in spite of..." or "overcoming..." but simply making sense in the story and the lives of those with whom they interact. Classy work and a bloody funny play. Thanks to everyone for a really memorable experience.
